At a meeting of the Finance & General Purposes Sub-Committee on January 14th 1935, it was agreed to accept the recommendations
made by the General Manager in the following report:
The Council of the Institute of Bankers have now decided to abolish the
Qualifying Examination, and to allow existing members of the Staff, as well as new entrants, to sit for examinations under Part One
of the syllabus.
This decision affects the conditions attaching to the Grading Scheme for Female Clerks, which Scheme was based
on the requirement to pass a Qualifying Examination, and it therefore necessitates a revision of the scheme. In my opinion, the circumstances
would be met by making Grade B subject to passing in Advances Book-keeping or completing Part One of the syllabus, and maintaining
the existing minimum and maximum rates. The present Scheme is set out below, and the suggested alteration is indicated in red ink.
If
effect is given to this alteration, it will only be necessary to revise the terms of four officers as hereunder:
Miss Otty
Grade
B. Salary £180. Service from May 1925
Passed in Advances Book-keeping.
In January 1933 it was made a condition that if she failed
to pass the Qualifying Examination by July 1935, she should be placed in Grade A, and her salary reduced to £155.
Having regard
to the fact that she cannot now sit for the Qualifying Examination, although she has been studying for same, and that she possesses
the Certificate for Advanced Book-keeping, it is recommended that she remain in Grade B, and that no alteration be made in her salary.
Miss
Nock
Grade B. Salary £180. Service from April 1924
Passed in Intermediate Book-keeping and the Qualifying Examination.
In January
1933 it was made a condition that if she failed to pass in Advanced Book-keeping and also the Qualifying Examination by July 1935,
she should be placed in Grade A, and her salary reduced to £155.
Having regard to the fact that she did pass the Qualifying Examination
last year, which was a stiff test, her length of service and general ability, it is recommended that she be allowed until July 1938
in which to pass in Advanced Book-keeping or complete Part One of the syllabus of the Institute of Bankers, and that her salary remain
at £180 until July 1938.
Miss Waller
Grade A. Salary £175. Service from August 1925.
Passed in Advanced Book-keeping.
In January
1933 it was made a condition that if she failed to pass the Qualifying Examination by July 1935, her salary should be reduced to £155,
and that for the time being she should remain in Grade A.
Having regard to the fact that she cannot now sit for the Qualifying
Examination, although she has been studying for same, and that she possesses the Certificate for Advanced Book-keeping, it is recommended
that she be transferred to Grade B without any alteration in salary.
Miss O'Malley
Grade A. Salary £155. Service from May 1925.
Passed
in Advanced Book-keeping.
To comply with the proposed new conditions, it will be necessary to promote her to Grade B. It is accordingly
recommended that she be transferred to Grade B, and her salary increased by £5 from the 1st April 1935, which will bring her to the
minimum rate for the Grade.
January 11th 1935.
