The Bank Committee approved of the above report and confirmed the various actions taken. They also passed a similar resolution on receiving the next report of the Staff Welfare Sub-Committee:

January 19th 1948

Report of Staff Welfare Officer.

Since the last meeting of the Committee, I have visited all Branches of the Bank, and have to report that the internal appearance of the premises is satisfactory. The floors at the Aston Cross and Ladywood Branches have been re-stained, and are now satisfactory. At some of the Branches, the hot water system was overhauled, and the boilers re-lined; resulting in considerable improvement in the heating of the premises. At the Moseley Branch premises, where War damage repairs are proceeding, the hot water heating apparatus has been disconnected for the time being, temporarily. The War damage repairs at Bordesley Green Branch are nearing completion, and, consequently, conditions for the staff have much improved.

Overalls.

The position regarding overalls has not improved. There is at present no coupon-free material on the market which would be suitable for making up into overalls for the staff.

Social Activities.

The Winter social activities began with a Whist Drive held at Head Office on November 12th. About 80 members of the staff and friends attended, and were pleased to have the company of Alderman Mrs Hyde. The Whist Drives are always a popular feature of the Winter programme, and it is hoped to hold another one on March 11th.

On December 16th, the Staff held a Christmas Party at Head Office. About 150 attended and took part in competitions, games and dancing. The gesture of the under-mentioned Members of the Bank Committee and members of their families, and the General Manager, in attending this function was much appreciated by the staff:

Alderman Mrs Hyde, with Mr Hyde.

Alderman James, with Mrs and Miss James.

Councillor Mrs Woollen, and Mr Woollen.

The following social events have also been arranged:

January 10th: A Children's Party.

February 18th: A Dance.

March 11th: A Whist Drive.

Each of these functions will held at Head Office.

Chairs for Branches.

The seven chairs ordered from Mr Saunders of Erdington, have now been received, and will be allocated to suitable Branches. In all 46 chairs have now been allocated to Branches.

Supply of Material for Table-Cloths.

Your Sub-Committee have authorised payment of an Account from C Hainsworth of Horsham, Sussex, for £70. 7. 0. for 144 yards of bleached plain twill ordered in October 1947 for the purpose of providing table-cloths at Branches, and only recently delivered.

Catering for Corporation Employees.

By direction of the Catering and Entertainments Committee, circulars have been sent to each Department enquiring whether it is desired that the Restaurants Department shall assume at some future date to be agreed, responsibility for the catering for the employees.

Your Sub-Committee have directed the General Manager to reply in the negative regarding the Municipal Bank.

Leave of absence without pay - Temporary Officer.

Your Sub-Committee have authorised the General Manager to grant one month's leave of absence without pay to Mrs W Trickett a temporary officer, for domestic reasons.

Report of Staff Welfare Sub-Committee.

Visits to Branches

The General Manager was requested to arrange for further visits to branches by members of the Committee from time to time.

Report of the Staff Welfare Officer

The following report of the Staff Welfare Officer was received and approved, and the actions therein referred to confirmed:

1. Visits to Branches.

Since the last meeting of the Committee, I have visited all Daily Branches of the Bank. I have also paid visits to members of the Staff who are absent owing to illness.

2. Cleanliness of Premises.

I have to report that the improvement in the cleaning of the premises is being maintained. In a few cases, where I thought it was warranted, I requested the Bank Manager to requisition an increased supply of cleaning materials. At several Branches, where interior decoration is needed and will be carried out when possible, arrangements have been made in the meantime for the Banking Halls and kitchen premises to be washed down.

3. Annual Balance.

During the period of the Annual Balance, in addition to catering for approximately 180 persons at Head Office, I was able to supply eight of the larger Branches with food for evening meals.

4. Illness of Cook.

I regret to report that the Cook at Head Office was taken ill a month ago, and had to enter the Women's Hospital for an operation. She is now making progress towards recovery, but at the present time I do not know whether or not she will be well enough to return to her employment with the Bank. She is sixty-one years of age. In the meantime, one of the Canteen assistants is undertaking the cooking of lunches and preparation of teas for the Staff.

5. Overalls for Female Staff.

The situation regarding overalls has not altered. Three more members of the Staff have purchased an overall and received the special allowance granted towards the cost.

6. Social Activities.

On February 16th a Dance was held at Head Office attended by approximately 100 members of the Staff and their friends. Various prizes were awarded, and these were presented to the winners by Alderman Mrs Hyde, who was accompanied by Mr Hyde. Councillor Martin and Mrs Martin, and the General Manager were also present.

A Whist Drive was held on March 10th, when 80 members of the Staff attended and spent an enjoyable evening. This function completed the Winter Social Programme.

At a Staff Committee Meeting held on March 10th, a Resolution was passed thanking Members of the Bank Committee for the help and interest shown in the welfare and social activities of the Staff during the past twelve months.

At the same meeting, suggestions for Summer social activities were considered, and a programme arranged to include a Theatre Party to Stratford-on-Avon; Tennis, Golf and Bowls Tournaments; Cricket Matches, and an outing to the Carding Mill Valley.
