Annual Reports - 1938
As in previous years, the Committee of Management's Annual Report included much statistical information, including the fact that the total amount of deposits in the year had exceeded 10 million for the first time. A comment regarding the fact that the purchase price of houses that were the subject of mortgage applications were now coming down towards the values that the Bank placed on them may have reflected a lowering of demand to purchase as the prospect of war increased. The increase in the branch network continued and the report mentions the plan to open an office at Newtown Row - a very poor area of the city in which the branch was never to be successfully established. The Report highlights the forthcoming Centenary of the city; the Bank participated in a pageant to celebrate this milestone by providing a suitable exhibit.
