November 11th 1935 to October 19th 1936 (10 Meetings)

 

The Minutes of the Meeting held on November 11th 1935 included the following:

 

Council Resolution 32,380: That, pursuant to the Birmingham Corporation Act, 1919, and of the Regulations made thereunder, the following persons be, and they are hereby, appointed to serve on the Bank Committee until the 9th November next, and to act as the Committee of Management for the Birmingham Municipal Bank, viz: Aldermen Barrow, Sir Percival Bower, Gelling, Hume, Poole, and Simpson; Councillors Cooper, Elcock, Godrich, Griffith, Martineau, and Morland.

 

The Bank Committee RESOLVED:

 

5530   That Councillor A H Cooper be elected Chairman of this Committee for the current Municipal year.

 

5251 That this Committee hereby record their appreciation of the manner in which Alderman Robert Raisbeck Gelling, JP, has presided over their meetings during the three years 1931 to 1934. They recall that Alderman Gelling has been a member of the Committee of Management continuously since the establishment of the Bank in September 1919, and that he rendered considerable assistance from 1916 to 1919 in connection with the temporary Corporation Savings Bank which preceded the Municipal Bank. The genial and courteous manner in which Alderman Gelling has conducted the business of the Bank during his chairmanship, and the devotion and enthusiasm he has displayed in all matters affecting the welfare of the Bank, have been much appreciated by his colleagues. In particular, they would refer to the prominent part taken by Alderman Gelling in connection with the erection of the new Head Offices of the Bank and the subsequent opening of the same by HRH The Prince George, KG. In thus recording their grateful recognition and cordial thanks to Alderman Gelling for his valuable services, the Committee express the hope that the Bank may long continue to benefit by his association and advice.

 

5531   That the ordinary meetings of this Committee be held, when possible, on the third Monday in each month (except August and September) at 11:30am.

 

5532  That the following members of this Committee be appointed the Finance and General Purposes Sub-Committee for the current Municipal Year, namely: Aldermen Barrow, Sir Percival Bower, Gelling, Poole and Simpson. Councillors Cooper, Morland and Martineau, and that the Sub-Committee, subject to the confirmation of this Committee where necessary, be empowered to deal with all matters affecting the Municipal Bank not delegated to the House Purchase Sub-Committee.

 

5533   That the following Members of this Committee be appointed the House Purchase Sub-Committee for the current Municipal Year, namely: Aldermen Barrow, Gelling, Hume and Poole. Councillors Cooper, Elcock, Godrich, Martineau and Griffith, and that the Sub-Committee, subject to the confirmation of this Committee where necessary, be empowered to deal with all matters relating to the House Purchase Department of the Bank.

 

5534   That the meetings of the Sub-Committees be held, when possible, on the second Monday in each month (except August and September) at the following times:

 

Finance and General Purposes Sub-Committee 11am

House Purchase Sub-Committee 11:45am

 

5535   That the Chairman (Councillor Cooper) be nominated as the representative of this Committee to serve on the General Purposes Committee of the City Council.

NOTE (1): Minute of Meeting held on February 17th 1936:

 

The Chairman referred to the loss sustained by the death of Alderman R H Hume and paid tribute to his valuable services, especially in the cause of thrift and in connection with the School Savings Banks.

 

5606  RESOLVED:- That this Committee, in recording their deep regret at the death of Alderman R H Hume, who was a member of the Committee since 1926, desire to express their appreciation of the valuable services rendered by him to the Municipal Bank during his membership, and generally to the City throughout his public life, which was characterised by a high standard of ability and devotion to the interest of his fellow citizens.

 

NOTE (2): the following Resolution (No 32,585) of the City Council was passed on March 10th 1936:

 

That Councillor Miss Kenrick be, and is hereby, appointed to serve on the Bank Committee for the remainder of the current municipal year, in place of the late Alderman Hume.

 

 

November 10th 1936 to October 18th 1937 (11 Meetings)

 

The Minutes of the Meeting held on November 10th 1936 included the following:

 

RESOLVED: That, pursuant to the Birmingham Corporation Act, 1919, and the Regulations made thereunder, the following members of this Council be, and they are hereby, appointed to serve on the Bank Committee until the 9th November next, and to act as the Committee of Management for the Birmingham Municipal Bank, viz: Aldermen Barrow, Sir Percival Bower, Gelling, Morland, Poole and Simpson; Councillors Cooper, Elcock, Godrich, Griffith, Miss Kenrick and Martineau.

32,999 Resolved: That Councillor Elcock be, and he is hereby, relieved of service on the Bank Committee, and that Councillor Gurden be, and he is hereby, appointed to fill the vacancy so created.

 

5810   RESOLVED:- That  Councillor Gurden be appointed a member of the Finance and General Purposes Sub-Committee and that Alderman Morland be transferred from that Sub-Committee to the House Purchase Sub-Committee.

 

NOTE (2): The following Minute of the City Council appointing Councillor W S Lewis on the Committee was received:

 

33,442 Resolved: That Councillor W S Lewis be, appointed a member of the Bank Committee in the place of the late Alderman Simpson.

 

NOTE (3): With reference to the death of Alderman Simpson, it was

 

6001   RESOLVED:- That this Committee, in expressing their deep regret at the death of their esteemed colleague, Alderman H Simpson, who was a member of this Committee for the past 15 years, hereby record their sincere appreciation of the valuable services rendered by him to the Municipal Bank.

 

SPECIAL MEETING:

 

May 31st: to consider a proposed loan to the First National Housing Trust for the erection of houses on the Pheasey Estate.
