Annual Reports

The reporting of the Bank's progress and various other aspects of its management were dealt with through three channels:

(1) Annual Reports & Statements of Accounts

The formal published report issued in accordance with the requirements of the Bank's Regulations:

An annual report and statement of account shall be prepared in such manner as the Committee of Management may direct. Copies of the last annual report and statement together with a list of the members of the Committee of Management and the principal officers of the Bank, shall be exhibited in a conspicuous position at the Head Office and all branch offices, for the information of depositors, and every depositor shall be entitled to receive a printed copy thereof.

Except for the first seven years (1919/20 to 1925/26), this publication included an Income & Expenditure Account for the year and a Balance Sheet showing the Bank's financial position at the year end. In the years 1919/20 to 1925/26 a Statement of Accounts (a Receipts & Payments Account) was included instead of an Income & Expenditure Account. In addition to this financial data and the other information required by the Bank's Regulations, the Report contained various information such as the location of branches and the services provided by the Bank. Commentary on the progress of the Bank during the year, and other relevant information, was provided in the 'Report of the Committee of Management'. A full copy of the published Report is reproduced in the pages linked below by the relevant year. Extracted details from the Financial sections of the entire set of annual publications are given in the FINANCIALS section of this website. For each of the years, the published  Annual Reports & Statements of Accounts is shown first, under the heading 'Published Report'.

The Income & Expenditure Accounts omitted for the years 1919/20 to 1925/26 are reproduced separately.

(2) Reports of the Bank Committee to the City Council

These reports reflected the fact that the Bank was a department of Birmingham Corporation. Much of what was reported was also included in the Annual Reports & Statements of Accounts, but often included additional information regarding the progress of the Bank. The Income & Expenditure Accounts included in these reports are not repeated here.

(3) Reports to the Bank's Committee of Management

These internal reports, prepared by the Bank's General Manager, provided more detail regarding the Bank's progress - often to a surprising degree of detail. The reports were only produced for a limited number of years and relate to a calendar year (rather than the financial year of the above reports) and are included here for the December 31st following the March 31st of the above. Where statistics attached to these reports are duplicates of those given in the above reports, they are omitted.

This section of the website reproduces these reports in relation to the following financial/calendar years:
