Retired Staff Association Magazine: April 1995
WILLIAM ARTHUR CAMWELL
W A Camwell died 14th January 1995. There can be few staff of Birmingham who did not know, or hear
stories of, 'Cam'. His capabilities as a Birmingham Municipal Bank employee were never in doubt, his speed and accuracy being legendary.
His manner was 'low profile' and as a branch manager he earned the devotion of his staff. But it was outside bank hours that he earned
fame and respect, in that his knowledge of road and rail transport was encyclopaedic, and his authority on the subject rarely challenged.
His funeral at St Mary's Parish Church, Handsworth was attended by many ex-members of the staff together with a large representation
from the Stephenson Locomotive Society and the Light Rail Transit Association, in a church where James Watt, William Murdock and Matthew
Boulton are buried. With such devotion to his leisure pursuits, can we ever refer to him as the 'late' W A Camwell?
