The main purpose of this website is to record the history of a unique Birmingham achievement:
- the Birmingham
Municipal Bank, that existed from September 1st 1919 to March 31 1976. Also included in this history are:
-
the Birmingham Corporation Savings Bank, the predecessor of the Birmingham Municipal Bank, whose formation played an integral
part in this history. That bank commenced business on September 29th 1916 and ceased to take deposits on October 31st 1919;
and
- the Birmingham Municipal Trustee Savings Bank (which existed from April 1st 1976 to November 20th 1979), which
was the successor to the Birmingham Municipal Bank.

A
major source of information regarding the years 1916 to 1927 is a book by the Bank's first General Manager, J P Hilton. This book
is entitled Britain's First Municipal Savings Bank, and several references are made to it throughout the website.
Historically,
some of Birmingham's suburbs included an apostophe in their name (eg: King's Heath). That practice was generally abandoned in more
recent years, although some signposts still exist that include the apostrophe. This website has adopted the convention of excluding
the apostrophe from the names of such branches.
The majority of the Bank's existence occured prior to the introduction of Decimal Currency in 1971. Reporting of values on the
website is mostly in whole Pounds (£). The value of amounts reported in shillings (s) and/or pence (d) can be converted to 'new'
pence (p) by reference to the website's article on Decimalisation.

A 'Unique Visitor' is a person or computer (a user) that has made at least one hit on at least
one page of the website during a calendar month.
If a user makes several visits during one calendar month, that user is
counted only once.
Until February 2014, this measure was used as a means of monitoring the use of the Website. However, from
that date, the raw data was suspended by the Website's hosting system, and the alternative set of data reported above replaced
it.
The data for 'Unique Visitors Each Month' was reinstated from November 2014 and is reproduced here, together with
the same statistic since the website was created.
